Everyone knows people tend to gain a little weight once they get in a relationship.  It’s not like people get in a relationship wanting to gain weight, it’s that they get comfortable and no longer feel such a great need to impress their partner.  Let’s face it, cuddling on the couch in front of the tube is a lot easier than mustering up the energy to hit the gym after a long day at work.

With demanding careers, busy schedules, and even the LA traffic, staying in shape in a relationship can seem like mission impossible.  Staying in shape—or getting in shape—when in a relationship can be challenging, but as the best matchmakers in Los Angeles, we know that getting in shape together can also bring you closer together and help your relationship thrive.

Whether you’re beginners or heavy hitters, training together can bring you and your partner closer and make the relationship stronger.  So with that being said, our Los Angeles matchmakers will show you some fun ways to get fit with your partner.

1. Go for Walks/Bike Rides Together

This one is great for beginners.  Grab a good pair of running shoes, a bottle of water, comfortable clothes, and get out for a quick walk or even a bike ride.  It’s a great full body workout that will really get you burning some calories.  You’ll work your legs and glutes.  If you live near a park, take advantage of it every morning or evening.  Don’t have a park near?  Don’t worry, go for a walk around your neighborhood.  You and your partner could even walk around the mall or down by the beach if you’re lucky enough to live nearby.  To add some resistance to your walk and burn more calories, climb a hill or do the stairs.  If you have children, push the baby stroller and switch turns.  Make sure you warm up for five minutes before the walk and do a minimum of 30 minutes for each walk.  Make it a point to set aside time each day and do it together.

2. Lift Weights

This is a great activity for couples who are ready to take it up a notch.  And don’t worry if you’re not at the same fitness level as your partner because you can motivate each other to push harder.  Most weight training involves sets or circuits, so you can take turns using the machines if you’re hitting the gym together.  Be sure to work your legs, arms, chest, glutes, and abs because these are your bigger muscles.  Make it a point to warm up and stretch together.  The two of you will quickly increase your muscle strength and endurance while shedding some pounds and keeping each other motivated along the way.

3. Join a Dance Class

What better way to get in shape and improve your relationship than joining a dance class together?  Hey, this is a fun way to learn some new moves that will impress your friends the next time your group hits the town.  Have you always wanted to learn salsa?  Well, now is the time to do it.  Any type of dance lesson will be fun as a couple, and it’s a great way to learn something new together and increase the romance in your relationship too.

4. Go Hiking

Go online and find some local trails with nice hills so the two of you burn some extra calories hiking your way to the top.  A hike is a wonderful activity to get in shape and spend some quality time together in the beautiful outdoors.  Get some fresh air and enjoy each other’s company as you burn a few hundred calories on your hike.

5. Take Boxing Classes

Similar to dance lessons, boxing is a great way for the two of you to have some fun burning calories.  You’ll find boxing to be very exhausting, which means you’ll be burning a few hundred calories in just one session.  Sparring with the mats will have you sweating like you were in the sauna.

If boxing isn’t something that interests you, you can try karate or MMA classes too.  Again, the point here is to have some fun as a couple while getting in a good sweat and avoiding the same boring gym routines every day.

6. Get Your Yoga On

You can tighten and tone up as a couple by taking yoga classes together.  This is a great activity to get in shape and relieve some stress.  Yoga will definitely help you shed those extra pounds and increase your flexibility, which can spice things up in the bedroom too.

7. Go Swimming

It’s time to get into your bathing suits and burn a few hundred calories at the pool.  To spice things up and burn a few more calories, make it a competition to see who can swim the fastest laps.  There’s nothing like a little competition with your partner to keep it fun and kick it up a notch.  Plus, swimming is a great exercise to burn many calories and strengthen your whole body.

Doing fun activities to stay in shape with your partner will not only get you in tiptop shape but allow you to bond, connect, and push each other to improve with your health and fitness goals.  The beauty of working out with your partner is having someone by your side—a teammate to push you when you need it.  And let’s face it, as a busy professional you might need that extra push to get in a good workout once in a while.

Good luck and have fun getting in shape with your partner this summer.  We know you’ll be fit in no time.  Do you have any other tips for our readers to get fit?  If so, share it with our readers on our Facebook page.
