The early stages of dating can be very awkward. You are just getting to know someone and don know much about them. You don’t know their likes and dislike, their passions and hobbies, and what they want for the future.

Learning about your date while simultaneously trying to show them who you are in a flattering and natural way can be tough to do.

Being nervous about getting through your first few weeks of dating isn’t a bad thing, but if you let your nervousness run rampant, you could end up acting in ways you normally don’t act. Whether it’s coming on too strong with the PDA, laughing too easily at his jokes, or not being honest about your feelings, any of these things can be huge red flags that you’re trying too hard on a date.

Today our Hollywood Hill matchmakers here at Los Angeles Singles Dating Service are going to show you the telltale signs you’re trying too hard.

1. You Laugh Too Easily

Humor is great to break the ice with a new love interest. If your date is the funny type, this can alleviate some of the nervousness of getting to know one another by proving a common interest – laughing. When you and your date can enjoy a good laughing session, it can cut though the tension and help you get to know each other better. However, if you find that you are laughing at anything your date says, or you’re laughing at things that weren’t intended to be funny, you may come off as awkward or even rude.

2. Fidgeting Too Much

You may notice that you tap your foot, tough your hair unnecessarily, or fidget with your phone when you’re nervous. This is a common habit people don’t even realize. If you’re fidgeting around on a date, that will tell your date that you are the nervous or anxious type.

Likewise, you may find yourself touching your date, whether it’s playfully touching his arm as you laugh at his joke, putting your arm around him, or intentionally sitting very close to him. You don’t have to be completely hands off during a date as long as they are enjoying those gestures, but if your date pulls away or doesn’t seem receptive of it, take that as a sign to back off.

3. Giving Him Too Many Compliments

Giving someone too many compliments can actually be a huge turn off. Giving a genuine compliment is great, it shows him that you’re paying attention to and you’re attracted to him, but if you’re complimenting him non-stop, it will look like you’re trying too hard.

4. Getting Too Far Ahead of Yourself

Some relationships develop very fast. While it’s best to take things slow and let the relationship go at a natural speed, sometimes things happen and a couple goes from casually dating to becoming exclusive in just a small amount of time. When feelings are there, this can be a great thing for many couples. However, it’s best to let the relationship develop slowly.

If you’re just starting to date someone new, and two dates into the relationship you’re planning vacations or expensive dates months in advance, you might run the risk of scaring your date away. Even if they’re really into you, being presumptuous about your relationship status too early could make them feel like you’re trying to control them. Until you know you are both on the same page about the relationship, it’s best to talk about the present and stop thinking too far ahead into the future.

If you’ve been struggling to get past first dates or to get a relationship off the ground, you may be guilty of these four common dating mistakes. Cut out these bad habits and you’ll have much better luck in your dating life.
