Whether it’s your first date after a long relationship or you’re been single for a long time, our LA matchmakers know everyone gets a little nervous for first dates.  After all, every first date could potentially be the one.  You could be meeting your soon-to-be soul mate over a cup of coffee or laughing with your future partner over a sandwich at a trendy bistro.  You might just be meeting someone who ends up being a good friend.  Either way, first dates can be intimidating, no matter how many you’ve been on in your lifetime.  What is certain, though, is that first dates are important if you want to find true love.

Here at Los Angeles Singles Dating Service, we know everything there is to know about first dates.  We have nearly 30 years of experience arranging first dates for high caliber singles looking for love in LA.  We know that sometimes you feel butterflies and sometimes you don’t.  Either way, don’t sweat it.  Today, our LA matchmakers are going to teach you step-by-step to start embracing and enjoying first dates.

1. You Need to Relax

This tip might seem obvious, but it’s often the most forgotten and hard to accomplish.

You have many thoughts running through your mind and relaxing just isn’t on the agenda.  Our LA matchmakers want you to clear your head before going on your date.  You should get in a good workout before heading out to help rinse your mind from all those jumping thoughts you have barreling through your head.  You want to feel relaxed and fresh and ready to have a good time.  First dates are all about creating memorable moments, which you can’t do if you’re feeling nervous.

2. Always Be Yourself

Being yourself might sound like the most cliché advice in the world, but believe us, it’s the safest bet.  This is something we tell our clients and are now sharing with you.  You need to be honest, upfront, and always act like yourself.

Acting like someone you’re not could be evident to your date—or worse, something you won’t be able to keep up with for long.  Your date will be confused the next time they see you and you’re acting like someone different.  If you’re looking for a long-term relationship, you must act like yourself from the beginning.  You want them to fall in love with you for you, not some fake version you created on the first few dates.

3. Come Up with Great Topics of Conversation

Many things can go wrong during a date, and sometimes there is nothing we can do about it.  Someone could be late thanks to that hectic LA traffic, the food could be awful, and one of you could spill your wine on the table… The possibilities for disaster are endless.  However, there are some things you can prepare for ahead of time.  You can prevent awkward silences by having great conversations topics planned out beforehand.  It only takes a few seconds of silence to create an awkward situation.  Our LA matchmakers want you to premeditate topics in your head.

Did something funny happen at work?  Did something strange happen on your way to the date?  Take note of everything going on around you, but make sure everything you bring up is light and fun.  Don’t divulge too much personal information or get into serious topics on a first date.  Remember, you’re just meeting one another for the first time.

4. Dress Appropriately

The way you dress for your first date will have a huge impact on your success.  You need to figure out an appropriate outfit for your date.  Despite your date taking place on a local park bench or at a trendy coffee shop, you need to find the appropriate outfit, something between casual and dressy.  You might not want to wear a tuxedo or a dress, but you don’t want to wear raggedy sweatpants or ripped up jeans either.

Just an extra tip from our matchmakers: make sure you wear something that goes with your personality and never dress like someone you’re not.  If you prefer dress pants over skirts, then opt for the pants.  Don’t feel like accessorizing?  Don’t worry, you don’t have to.  You don’t have to look like you’re a magazine model if that’s not who you are.  But if it’s you, then go for it.

5. Go Well-groomed

Good hygiene will make all the difference in the success of your first date.  And good hygiene goes above having fresh breath.  It’s about having your whole act together.  You must show up to your date with your best foot forward and always accentuate your best characteristics.  In a nutshell, being clean means being responsible and well put together.  Meeting your date after a few rounds of golf or right after hot yoga is only acceptable if you have time to shower and freshen up beforehand.  Mature singles who are looking for real love want a partner who practices good hygiene and takes pride in themselves.

6. Don’t Overdo It

No matter if you’re going to a local coffee shop or the swankiest bar in town, don’t overdo it.  You might feel nervous for your first date, which could cause you to go a little hard on the drinks.  Don’t think you have to guzzle a few martinis or slam tequila shots to get the ball rolling.  Our Los Angeles Singles matchmakers know this will only lower your inhibitions and make you say or do things you’ll regret later.

Having a drink on your date is completely acceptable, but becoming a sloppy drunk isn’t.  You could have won your date over in the beginning, but completely ruined it all by having too many drinks by the end of the date.

7. Don’t Forget Your Manners

You don’t have to attend an etiquette class to learn this one.  Having good manners should naturally come to you.  It’s not just about being courteous to your date but everyone around you.  Be courteous to your waiter, be nice to the taxi driver, and say your pleases and thank yous.  In today’s modern world, having good manners is rare.  People are constantly glued to their phones while eating, all the while ignoring their dates.  Put your cell phone away and give your date the attention they deserve.  That is how you show your good manners.

Don’t let your first date jitters get the best of you.  Use the above guide from our LA matchmakers to help you on your first date.  If things are going well, ask your date for a second date.
