While the experts in the art of matchmaking and helping singles find true love, we also know how to help people get over bad breakups. Let’s just admit one thing: breakups hurt. It doesn’t matter if you do the dumping or are the dumpee.

At the end of the day, you had feelings for this person. You texted all the time, and you probably got used to the fighting. Now, you’re without them. No matter if the relationship was good or not, we all get comfortable and adapt to our environment.

How to Get Over a Breakup

But, of course, you’ll get through this pain. It just takes time to get back on your feet. Sometimes this takes a while, and probably a lot longer than you want.

At the end of the day, you can’t rush your feelings, but you can do things to become more self-aware and connected to yourself, which helps you heal and move on.

Breakups hurt a lot, but the best way to move on is to take it as a learning experience and grow.

Today, our San Fernando Valley matchmakers here at Los Angeles Singles Dating Service will show you how to get over a breakup fast.

1. First rule: There are no rules.

We know you probably thought we were going to give you a formula, some exact outline in order to get over a breakup. But the truth is, there is no such thing. Some people can move on in a couple of days, while it takes weeks, months, or even years for many others. It really depends on you and the type of relationship you had, along with whether or not you saw the breakup coming.

2. Don’t put a time limit on the healing process.

People make the mistake of putting a time limit on their healing process. Understanding how to get over someone fast is giving yourself space and time to grieve and process what happened. If not, you will end up bouncing from one relationship to the next.

3. Work through your emotions.

There are people who put on a fake smile and pretend they are okay. Truthfully, they’re not okay, so why bother pretending? If you’re sad then be sad. Stay in on the weekend if you have to, watch sad movies, cry it out, and pass out holding a pint of ice cream. But don’t fall into a bad routine of these unhealthy behaviors. A few days of unusual grieving is okay, but don’t go overboard.

4. Don’t fill emptiness with sex.

Haven’t you watched any romantic movies in your lifetime? You know that doesn’t work and never will. So many people think that if they rebound, they’ll get over the person quicker, but that’s not true at all. If anything, it makes you realize that you’re not over your partner yet, so give yourself plenty of time to heal before you jump back in the dating scene.

5. Delete them from everything.

Don’t keep their number in your phone. Don’t keep them in your Facebook friend’s list. Don’t follow them on Instagram. Nothing. And when we say nothing, we mean nothing. Remove them from anything from your life. If you want to get over them fast, then stop stalking them on social media.

6. Set your emotions free.

So many people bottle up their emotions instead of letting them go. But this only prolongs the post-break up period. You need to get your emotions out. We don’t care if you write a song or a poem, take up karate classes, or talk to a therapist. The point is – get your emotions out.

We’re not saying getting over your heartache is going to be a walk in the park, because we all know it never is. But that doesn’t mean you can’t do your best to work through it in a healthy and productive manner. Use these six tips from our dating and relationship experts and work through it one day at a time.
